The Shea Resource Centre is a research and development hub for the shea industry, supporting innovation, learning and demonstration across cultivation, processing, market development and sustainability.
Central Holding for Shea Seedlings
The Centre acts as a holding facility for shea seedlings that partners are unable to transplant within a given year, ensuring their survival and healthy growth.
Quality Care for Grafted Shea
All grafted shea seedlings are nurtured in a controlled environment with expert care until they are ready for transplanting.
Collaboration and Research
The Centre enables collaboration between the Global Shea Alliance and the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana on research and development of shea propagation methods, including grafting, direct seeding and raising seedlings for transplanting.
The facility currently operates as a holding site, with 2 large nurseries under development to accommodate seedlings from the ongoing programme. Plans include a demonstration farm showcasing agroforestry models and grafted shea seedlings, as well as a training centre for organic fertiliser, briquette and biochar production. In the future, office space and a conference room may be added, creating a one stop centre for training, demonstration and knowledge exchange.
The Centre is located in Ligba, near Tamale, close to a large dam that will provide water for the nurseries. Current work focuses on grafting and nursery development, with other components to follow as funding becomes available.
